Letting Go of Control
Letting Go of Control
Scripture
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Control often feels like safety. It gives us the illusion that if we plan carefully enough, prepare thoroughly enough, and stay alert at all times, we can protect ourselves from disappointment, failure, or pain. So we manage schedules, outcomes, relationships, and even prayers—believing that control will bring peace.
But instead of peace, control often produces something else: anxiety, exhaustion, and restlessness.
Many of us are tired not because life is heavy, but because we are carrying things God never asked us to carry alone. We replay conversations, anticipate worst-case scenarios, and overthink decisions, all while silently wondering why peace feels so distant.
This is where a Jesus-centered life calls us to pause and reconsider our posture.
Proverbs 3:5–6 invites us into a different way of living—one rooted not in self-reliance, but in trust. Scripture does not say, “Trust in the Lord when it makes sense,” or “Lean on your understanding when you feel confident.” It calls us to trust God with all our heart, even when the path ahead feels unclear.
Leaning on our own understanding limits us to what we can see, predict, and control. But God sees the full picture. He understands what we cannot, works in ways we cannot, and moves according to timing far greater than ours.
Letting go of control does not mean becoming careless or passive. It does not mean we stop planning, dreaming, or making wise choices. Instead, it means we release the burden of outcome and place our confidence in the One who directs our steps.
When we acknowledge God in all our ways—our decisions, relationships, finances, fears, and future—we invite His wisdom into every area of our lives. Surrender creates space for guidance. Trust opens the door to peace.
Trusting Jesus doesn’t mean we stop caring—it means we stop carrying what was never meant for us alone.
As we loosen our grip, God gently straightens our path. He leads with clarity, even when we don’t have all the answers. And in that surrender, we discover a peace that planning alone could never produce.
Reflection
-
What area of your life are you trying to control right now?
-
What fears surface when you consider releasing it to God?
-
How might your heart change if you trusted God with the outcome?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often try to control what You’ve already promised to guide. Teach me to trust You with my whole heart. Help me release my need to understand everything and lead me in Your ways. I surrender my plans, my fears, and my future to You. Amen.
